My Chemical Romance
My Chemical Romance, a small band from New Jersey to a huge hit from UK to Japan, started soon after 9-11. The lead singer Gerard Way was on a ferry from Jersey to New York working as a cartoonist when he saw the planes hitting the Twin Towers. Right then, he realized he was just wasting away for a corporation, doing nothing important with his life. He went home that day and wrote Skylines and Turnstiles, My Chemical Romances first song. He soon enlisted his friends to join a band for one last try at making a band. He got guitarist Ray Toro, drummer Matt Pelissier, and even his little brother Mikey Way to play bass just for the band. With Mikey came his idea of for the band name My Chemical Romance, inspired by the second title of a novel written by the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, Three Tales of Chemical Romance.
Guitarist Frank Iero soon joined and they released their album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (affectionately known as Bullets). The songs spread quickly through fans, and soon many were dear fans. In less than two weeks in being a band, they got calls from major record labels. In less than two years they signed under Reprised Records.
The album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was released, and then things went huge. Their record was selling quickly with hits like the upbeat song Im Not Okay and the sorrowful song of loss in The Ghost of You. Problems then started to hit from all sides. Gerard Way was an alcoholic, but things turned chaotic when his drinking and pill taking led to stronger drugs. Then, their drummer departed after failing at practice and bad playing, soon had to be replaced with drummer Bob Bryar. With Gerard on the verge of suicide, no one knew if Bob could fit the place as drummer with the record selling like crazy, manager Brian Schechter was scared of everything going down a huge spiral and out of control. After many midnight phone calls and help from friends, fans, and family, Gerard got clean and sober and has stayed so ever since. A lot of practices and missing a few concerts helped Bob get to speed and soon the band sounded better than ever.
Their next album The Black Parade was created soon before the ending of the last Revenge tour. They began working on it before ever hitting the official studio, working out of the back half of a tour bus on lyrics, rifts, and overall flow of many songs that were later added to the album. The official studio they worked inside of for the album was The Paramour, a large recording studio and a haunted house with large grounds and rooms for the band mates to stay in. Right away it felt like this place was going to consume you and eventually, it would. said Gerard. The house had a sense of being haunted, a dark presence was always watching. Not many details were ever released about the recording experience inside The Paramour and no video footage of the recording experience was ever taken, but it was a very dark time for them all inside the house, sometimes they just couldnt play and a band mate had to leave due to emotional problems.
After much studious work even through the emotional strain and zombie states, they created the album that would spread the tale of a man called The Patient, who died too young and death came to him as The Black Parade. With songs speaking of struggle, pain, and loss but mostly of death, the band faced our [their] greatest fear and became it. The album was a hit and many grew to fall in love with their sound. The Black Parade attracted even more fans from all the love present fans had for every pit of the album. I myself first heard of My Chemical Romance through The Black Parade. It was like another persona for the bands. During concerts they would announce We are the Black Parade; My Chemical Romance is next on the bill.
For the future of My Chemical Romance, no one is sure. The band promised the release of their next album in early 2009 after one last tour through the U.S. and Europe and a six month break from the road. The six month break is really needed for all, especially the newly married couples Gerard Way to bassist Lyn-Z of Mindless Self Indulgence, Mikey Way to Alicia, and the even more recent marriage of Frank Iero to long time fiancée Jamia Nestor. A video DVD of a concert in Mexico City is soon to be released to officially announce the ending of The Black Parade phase. This DVD is deviously entitled The Black Parade Is Dead!
My Chemical Romance has meant a lot to me, from their start as five boys from Jersey to five boys from Jersey who are a little bit well known by teenagers, adults and children everywhere. Sticking true to their colors and their love of vampires, horror films, and music, they continue to make beautiful music together. Their music is the small inspiration to help me say Im not okay to the bigger statement of Im not alone, no matter how down I feel. Many fans share the sentiment of MCR saved my life and in a small way, Im proud to declare I share their sentiment. So as MCR says
Unleash the
bats!
